Community Guidelines

The Story Before The Rules
Before there were apps, there was a fire. People sat around it. The oldest spoke first. The youngest listened until they were ready to speak. Someone would always disagree — usually politely — and the night would end better than it started.
Before GenZ is that fire. Our community guidelines exist for one reason: to keep the fire warm and welcoming for everyone who shows up to it.
1. Speak from where you stand
Tell the stories you know — from your family, your village, your memory, your truth. You don't have to be an authority to share something true. You just have to be honest about whose memory it is.
2. Honour the source
When you tell a folktale, name the language or community it comes from where you can. Credit grandmothers, aunties, uncles and neighbours where they shaped what you're passing on.
3. Disagree by recording, not destroying
If you hear something you know to be wrong, the best reply is your own voice. Record your version. The community is bigger than any one memory — let people hear both.
4. No hate. No harassment. No exceptions.
You may not use Before GenZ to:
- Attack people based on ethnicity, language, religion, gender, sexuality, ability, or any protected characteristic
- Threaten violence — direct, veiled, or "joking"
- Harass, doxx, or stalk anyone
- Coordinate pile‑ons against individuals or groups
5. Keep it human, keep it real
- No spam, scams, or commercial promotion disguised as stories
- No deepfaked or AI‑generated voices passing as real people — if you use synthetic voice, label it
- No content stolen from another creator without credit
- No impersonation of real people, especially elders or cultural figures
6. Protect kids, fiercely
We have zero tolerance for content that sexualises, exploits, or endangers children. Such content is removed immediately, accounts permanently banned, and where required by law, reported to authorities. See our Child Safety page.
7. Respect privacy, including the dead's
Many of our stories are about people who can no longer consent to their own retelling. Be careful with names, locations, and details that could identify private individuals or their families today. When in doubt, use first names or composite identifiers.
8. Report — don't engage
If you see something that breaks these guidelines, use the in‑app report tool. Don't argue with bad actors in replies — that only gives them more oxygen. Our moderation team reviews reports daily.
What happens when guidelines are broken
Depending on severity, our response may include:
- A private warning and a chance to remove the content
- Temporary suspension of recording or replying
- Removal of the offending content
- Permanent account ban for severe or repeated violations
- Referral to authorities where required by law
Appeals
If you believe we made the wrong call, email appeals@beforegenz.com. A different reviewer than the one who made the original decision will look at your case.
One last thing
These guidelines will change as we learn. If you have ideas for how to make this fire warmer, write us. We do read every email, and the best ideas often come from the people sitting in the back.
